Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – LLactoc – Rainbow Mountain Peru – Vinicunca

On the morning of the rainbow mountain horseback riding tour, we will pick you up from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco at 4:45 am and then travel to the South Valley of Cusco in our private transportation.

Along the way, we will observe picturesque Andean villages, Inca-era agricultural terraces, fertile valleys, and beautiful rolling mountains. After driving approximately two hours south until we reach the district of Cusipata – Paucarpata in the province of Quispicanchi, we will stop to enjoy a delicious continental breakfast. After enjoying breakfast, we will head back to the van to continue the trip for another hour along a dirt road until we reach the starting point of the Rainbow Mountain tour.

As we travel through traditional villages, with impressive views of ancient Inca terraces, still used for agriculture, we will observe herds of sheep, llamas, and alpacas and the occasional shepherd or local people going about their daily activities.

Start of our horseback riding trip

Once we arrive at the start of the horseback ride up Vinicunca Mountain, or the bus parking place, located at 4,630 m (15,190 ft). there, we will marvel at the spectacular view of the Peruvian Andes, the Andes Mountains, and glacier peaks. Then we will start our adventure excursion on horseback with one of the new Natural attractions of Cusco, known as the «7 Colors Mountain» or Rainbow Mountain, also called WINIKUNKA (Vinicunca), declared a «Unique Natural Treasure in the World».

As we ascend, we will observe the typical flora and fauna of the Andes, including the presence of llamas and alpacas grazing along the slopes; this area is home to numerous Quechua Indians who still preserve their customs.

As we approach the famous Rainbow Mountain, we will begin to see the colorful minerals that make up the painted hills and also, we will have great views of ice glaciers. If we are lucky, we may spot wild vicuñas roaming the alpine landscape, the undomesticated local fauna of the camelid family in South America. After climbing on horseback for approximately 45 minutes, we will reach the base of the rainbow mountain «Vinicunca» and then we will have to dismount and climb the final stretch on foot for about 25 minutes to reach the summit of the rainbow mountain.

Time to explore the surroundings and take pictures of the landscape

Just a brief note beforehand: Horses are not allowed to go all the way up to the Vinicunca viewpoint or the Colored Mountain, according to local laws and regulations. The last part of the climb up Rainbow Mountain may take less than 25 minutes or more, depending on your speed and fitness. Upon reaching the viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain, known locally as Vinicunca or Colored Mountain (5100 m / 16, 732 ft), we will be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views not only of Vinicunca Mountain but also with the breathtaking view of Ausangate Mountain (6,384 m / 20,945 ft) – the highest peak in the Cusco region.

At the viewpoint of Vinicunca Mountain, we will take our time to admire the astonishing beauty of this impressive natural formation, the valley with grazing alpacas, and the ‘Red Valley’ in the distance, and feel the thrill of witnessing an unforgettable spectacle.

We will then explore the surrounding area and contemplate the breathtaking scenery while your guide explains the theories about the origin of this mountain, the geography, the ecosystem, and the color of the mountain. Take this opportunity to take some amazing pictures or simply immerse yourself in the landscape.

We get ready to return to Cusco

We will spend between 45 minutes and an hour at the top, depending on how fast you have walked and the weather conditions. If you would like to spend more time there, let your guide know. Once we have enjoyed the magnificent views, we will take the 15-minute walk back to the horse station.

We will then return on horseback along the same trail to the point where we started our horseback ride (Llaqto), where our transportation will be waiting to take us back to Cusipata to enjoy a delicious Andean lunch. After lunch, we will board again our private transportation to return to Cusco City, arriving between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.
